How to Build a Garden Box Step by Step
Garden box is a good place to grow various herbs, vegetables, fruit, trees and flowers since you can control the soil. If you are interested you might want to know how to build a garden box.
Prepare the Tools and Materials
You need to first prepare the tools such as carpenter's square, measuring tape, spirit level, drill bits, cordless drill, circular saw, sledgehammer, crowbar, mattock, and spade. Then for the materials you need hardwood sleepers or treated pine, sleeper peg, galvanized screws, batten screws, string line, spray paint, and pencil.
How to Build a Garden Box Step by Step
- Lay down the longest sleepers on the ground and make sure they are straight.
- Then measure the distance between each end of the longest sleepers and make sure they are square. This will become the width of the garden box.
- Cut the sleepers to the right measurement for both sides.
- Create U shape with the sleepers then use a drill to create a hole on the end then put a temporary screw in. Repeat the process to all corners until you can create the perfect square shape.
- Mark the corner outside from the sleepers using spray paint so you will know where you need to dig later on when you need to build a garden box.
- Take and remove the sleepers away. To make sure you can put them in the right spot with the right corner in place you can mark each corner before removing it.
- Dig and remove grass in the area you have marked before. Make sure that the depth is enough for the sleepers to sink and only 50 mm left above ground. If you do not want the grass to grow into the box then you need to dig it deep enough to remove the concrete slab below.
- Then remove concrete using a crowbar by loosening all of the corners. Then you can use a hammer to break it small enough so you can lever it easier. Then you can continue to dig the ground to the required depth.
- Move back to the sleepers and then join the box using batten screws on each corner of the bed. You should use two screws on each corner to make sure they are strong enough. Once the box is created you can bring it to the spot you have dug before.
- When you build a garden box, you need to use a string line and run it along the end of the spot and make sure that the box is straight.
- After you make sure that the box is straight then you need to use a hammer to put the stakes in and join the box. You can drill 4 galvanized screws into the stakes and then use it to join the sleepers. Repeat this process to join all of the sleeper corners.
- Put the soil inside the box and now you are ready to use your garden box.
As you can see, you can build a garden box yourself by following some simple steps above. You can choose your own box size and then adjust the steps accordingly.
