Rose Garden Maintenance for Healthy Growth and Bloom
- Watering You should know that rose is a plant with very high water demand, thus you need to water them especially during their growth season. Water them in the morning so any leftover water that stays on their leaves can evaporate as the sun rises. You do not want to have any water on their leaves too long since it can cause fungus and mold. So, it is better to water them on the base instead of from the top of the plant. The roses need between 2.5cm to 5.1cm of water every week. When the weather is too dry then you might need to provide more water. You can feel the soil before you water them, if it is dry then you need to water them. You can water less in fall and do not water them in winter.
- Add new pile of mulch Another rose garden maintenance that you need to add to your roses when it grows is a new pile of mulch. The mulch will help to prevent weeds and retain moisture longer on the soil. So try to add in between 5.1cm to 10.2cm height of mulch to your rose beds. You can cut grass, straw, wood chips, even shredded hardwood. They can make your rose stay moist so spread them around the base of the rose and make sure to cover the entire beds. You might need to re-add more as necessary during the rose growing season.
- Deadhead the roses If you see any of the rose blooms begin to fade and lose their color even before it wilts then you need to remove it immediately. Cut them right on the stem below the bloom with a 45 degree angle. Do not worry as if the rose is healthy then it will create more bloom for you. But remember to not cut any bloom a month before winter frost comes so there is no bloom during winter. But if you do not cut this bloom then it will make seeds not another bloom. You can actually do that if you want to have rose hips instead of another bloom. This will create a beautiful rosehip look during the winter season.
- Cut dead leaves Rose garden maintenance that you need to do is to cut off from your rose dead leaves. This is important since they will make the roses become vulnerable to various diseases including fungus. It will also limit the roses growth and they will appear stunned and not having their fresh look. Use small pruning shears and cut the leaves regularly each time you see any dead leaves.
- Do not forget to weed Removing weed from the soil is very important if you want to keep the rose healthy. Of course you can try to add mulch on the rose beds to prevent the weed from growing. But even with the mulch you will still find some weeds growing every now and then. Do not worry as you can just pull them out from the rose beds to remove it. But if you want it to be extra clean you can try to use a small spade to dig the weed out and remove their roots. Do not use herbicide on the roses.
- Adding fertilizer You need to add fertilizer for your rose 3 times in a year. You can add it during early spring since this is the time for the rose to grow. Then you need to add more fertilizer as you see that the rose starts to bloom since this is the time they need more nutrients to ensure their bloom will grow. Lastly you can add the third round in mid-summer to maintain their health. Make sure to use fertilizer that is specifically formulated for roses so it will give the right nutrient for your rose. If you want something more natural and easy then you can use coffee grounds as fertilizer since it contains the right nutrients.
As you can see, rose garden maintenance is very easy to do since you only need to follow a few things to make them grow healthy.
