Collecting Rainwater: The Importance and How to Do It

Collecting rainwater, or also known as rainwater harvesting, refers to the action of collecting the (run-off) water from a building or structure so you can store it and use it later. This method has been done for decades and centuries. The traditional method would include collecting the rain from the house’s roof. The water is generally collected in the gutters, and then it will channel (the water) to downspouts and into some containers.

Why Collect Rainwater?

The rainwater harvesting methods are done to save up precious resources and money. We all know that rain water is basically valuable. Wasting it would be a bummer. When you are able to harness it, you can save money (for the utility bills), reduce water consumption, and nourish your own garden. After all, collecting rainwater is pretty simple and straightforward; not to mention that it’s also a sustainable practice. Everyone can do it, including you.

Rainwater Collection System Installation

You need to install a collection system for the rain water, which can be done in your property. This can range from a simple rain barrel to a more elaborate setup with multiple barrels and a gutter system. Rain barrels are typically placed beneath downspouts to capture rainwater as it flows off the roof. Choose a location and proper rainwater tank that is convenient for accessing the collected water and where the barrel will receive ample rainfall.

Choose the Correct Barrel

Rain barrels come in various sizes, typically ranging from 50 to 100 gallons, so select one that meets your water needs and available space. Look for barrels made from durable materials such as UV-resistant plastic or food-grade polyethylene to ensure longevity. Features such as a screened inlet to keep out debris and an overflow outlet to prevent flooding are also beneficial.

Setup and Positioning

You want to be sure about the correct positioning. Place the barrel beneath a downspout on your roof to collect rainwater efficiently. Ensure that the barrel is placed on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping or damage. Use a diverter or a flexible downspout extension to direct water into the barrel and away from the foundation of your home. Install a tight-fitting lid on the barrel to prevent mosquitoes and other pests from breeding in the water.

Rain Barrel Maintenance

Don’t forget to perform regular maintenance for your barrel so it will function normally and effectively. Check the barrel regularly for leaks, cracks, or damage, and repair or replace any damaged components as needed. Clean the barrel and gutters regularly to remove debris and prevent clogs. In colder climates, consider winterizing your rain barrel to prevent freezing and damage during the colder months.

Once you have enough water, you can use it to water your garden. You can use a watering can. But if you have a spigot on the barrel, you can attach a hose to it. Rain water is naturally free of chemicals, which make it safe for your plants. If you seriously want to save up money for water, you should think about collecting rainwater and make use of it.
